How sound becomes art
When we record sound, the peaks and troughs of each sound wave are translated into numbers. The louder the sound, the bigger the numbers. We take these numbers and map them over time to create a waveform — a visual fingerprint of your song.
SoundViz uses a special process that takes this data and creates a multi-color representation of your sound. Not only are the peaks and troughs symbolic of the music, so are the colors. Louder moments get different colors than quiet passages, creating a gradient that tells the story of the song from start to finish.
What songs make the best art?
Almost any song creates interesting art, but some genres produce particularly striking waveforms:
Songs with dynamic range — tracks that build from quiet to loud (like "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Stairway to Heaven") create dramatic, varied patterns. One of our customers noted their "Stairway to Heaven" waveform actually looks like a staircase.
Acoustic and vocal-heavy tracks — clean recordings with clear vocals produce crisp, defined waveforms.
Electronic and dance music — strong beats and synths create bold, rhythmic patterns with satisfying symmetry.
Classical music — orchestral pieces produce incredibly rich, complex waveforms full of detail.
Three steps to your song art
1. Upload your song. Drag and drop an MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A or AAC file into our editor. A full-length song works fine.
2. Design your waveform. Choose between linear (horizontal bars) or radial (circular) style. Pick from preset color palettes or create your own. Adjust bar width, spacing, and border radius for the exact aesthetic you want.
3. Print or download. Order a gallery-wrapped canvas, fine art print, or download the high-res digital file. Every print is archival quality.
More than decoration
A song on your wall is more than decoration — it's a conversation starter, a memory trigger, and a piece of art that is deeply, personally yours.
Research shows that music has the ability to take you back in time and recall old memories. A certain song can remind you of a place, a person, or a period of your life. Looking at art increases blood flow to the brain by 10% — the equivalent of looking at someone you love.
Sound wave art combines both. When you look at it, you see beauty — but you also remember the sound. Two art forms fused into one object on your wall.
Frequently asked questions
What audio formats do you accept?
We accept MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, M4A and AAC files. If your file is in an unsupported format, you can convert it to MP3 using free tools like Audacity.
Can I use a song from Spotify or Apple Music?
Streaming services use DRM protection, so you cannot upload directly from them. You can purchase DRM-free MP3s from Amazon Music (usually $1-2 per song) or use your own recordings.
Is SoundViz really free?
Yes! Creating and customizing your sound wave is completely free. You can make as many designs as you want. You only pay when you choose to order a print or digital download.
How long does the song need to be?
Any length works, but 2-5 minute songs tend to produce the best-looking waveforms. Longer songs will be downsampled to fit the canvas, which can reduce detail.
Can I use just a portion of a song?
Yes! If you want to visualize only the chorus or a specific section, trim the audio file before uploading. We recommend Audacity (free) for easy audio trimming.
